V-Dream

VR interface for high-dimensional data space

V-Dream

A Virtual Reality Interface for Navigating Generative Design Solution Space.

Internship project @Autodesk, Summer 2017

V-Dream is a virtual reality interface to help designers review large number of design solutions that is being generated with AI tools. These tools can produce thousands of design solutions that are all satisfying mechanical criteria. However, the designers need to inspect all of them to select the ones they like the most. The main challenge is to help the designers navigate in a large pool of solutions with high-dimensional feature.

Our solution was to use dimension reduction methods to find similar clusters and let the designer walk through them in virtual reality and pick the ones that satisfies them. User walks between the clusters of solutions and pick the ones that likes the most. After the first round of selection, it can reshuffle the clusters to organize the design space in new clusters. These new clusters include the similar objects with similar features. The workflow can be summarized as a recursive search/select/shuffle process, until the user finds a small number of selection for more in-depth inspections.
